About us

Tenun Ikat Lembata is a self help project for encouraging and promoting the traditional ikat weaving art in Lembata Island Indonesia.

Our aims are:

  • To continue the traditional work of art and their culture.
  •

  • Conserving nature by sustaining particular plant and vegetation for the need of dyes.
  •

  • To work closely together with the weavers in villages, local schools and the communities and encouraging the younger generation to participate and build their interest to the traditional textiles art.
  •

  • Marketing and the quality of the textiles are also a very important parts of the aims of this project.
  •

  • Working together in groups on pooling their resourcers to be able to develop a reliable income to suplement their subsistance lifestyle.
  •

This project was established in 1990 following the exhibition of Textiles of Lembata in Darwin Museum of Art which showed and sold these cloths from Lembata. On that time my family and I was based in West Timor so that communication with weaver and travelling to the island is easier. After all this year passing by, and time trough to follow up this project once again.
