The Lembata Island
About Lembata Island
Lembata Island is surrounded by volcanic mountains, and its rich soil that allows fruits and vegetation to grow freely. Lembata (known as Lomblen until 1954) is one of the Solor Islands in the eastern Indonesian province of Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT). Together with the eastern portion of Flores, and the other Solor Islands, it forms the modern political regency or Kabupaten of East Flores (Flores Timur). In the year 2000 Lembata was declared as an independent Kabupaten with their main town is Lewoleba.
Lembata is a relatively isolated island. This has been a major factor in the endurance of its rich textiles swap round tradition and its people. Although modern communication systems are now making Lembata more accessible, it still lies off the beaten track and its fabrics remain relatively rare. The only ways to reach this island is by boat and by air.
